    What is Visual Stress?

Did you know that there is reportedly a 30% incidence amongst school children of visual stress in recent years?

Visual stress or Visual Dyslexia or Meares-Irlen Syndrome is light and glare sensitivity, which manifests itself as the experience of unpleasant symptoms related to vision while reading, writing and generally concentrating on any text. It can be managed using orange coloured overlays and orange tinted lenses. The symptoms include; changes and distortion in shape and colour. These occur especially after long periods of concentration. Visual stress has also been known to cause sore eyes and headaches. The result is slower than expected reading. Sounds familiar?

Studies have confirmed that there are many children who have been misdiagnosed with dyslexia or dyspraxia when the issue is actually this type of stress, which is causing distorted or blurred words. In other words, slow reading thought to be due to Dyslexia, may actually be down to Visual Stress.

If your child or pupil is diagnosed with Visual Stress, having a coloured overlay like orange in place has been proven to improve reading speeds dramatically and instantly in the majority of cases. Consequently, when it works, the child will see an improvement in their literacy levels. There is no need for long periods of therapy.

The use of orange tinted glasses helps Dyslexics significantly when reading from the interactive whiteboard and computer if they use aqua blue overlays.
